Children’s Initiatives

Closing the inequality gap, one child at a time …

Historically, the Children’s Initiative Committee worked to provide academic enrichment opportunities and to improve the overall health and wellness of the children at our partner preschools. Through our Building Healthy Kids Program, our volunteers developed and implemented monthly events focused on various aspects of childhood wellness including, but not limited to, “Building Healthy Hearts,” “Building Healthy Minds,” “Building Healthy Teeth,” and “Building  Healthy Feet.” In addition to our monthly curriculum, the JLGP sponsored class trips and provided students with take-home literacy kits.

As part of this program, the JLGP served as an official partner of the Payless Gives Shoes 4 Kids program.  Our League was awarded 100 merchandise certificates which allowed each child to choose new, properly fitted shoes.

In addition to our Building Healthy Kids Program, the JLGP supported programs designed to bring hands-on science to classrooms and teachers. We hosted science fairs at our partner preschools, and organized and sponsored numerous Teacher Launch Seminars (TLS).   TLS was a workshop that offers preschool and early elementary school teachers creative new ways to bring science into their classrooms.
